Choosing Scale for Side Tables
Choosing Scale for Side Tables

A side table should feel useful without interrupting the room. Start by looking at the height of the sofa or chair it will sit beside. A table that sits close to the arm height usually feels natural for daily use, while a lower table can create a quieter, more relaxed composition.

Width matters as much as height. In a compact room, a narrow side table can hold a book, a drink, or a small vessel without adding visual weight. In a larger seating area, a wider or heavier table can help anchor the space and balance larger upholstered pieces.

Material also changes the feeling of scale. Stone and solid wood tend to feel grounded, even in simple forms. Slim metal or open-frame pieces feel lighter and can work well where the room already has heavier furniture.

The best side table does not compete for attention. It supports the room through proportion, texture, and placement.
